Tems – Burning

In “Burning,” Tems explores her reaction to seeing her dreams come true and having some form of fear that it might not last. Appearing as the third track on her debut album Born In The Wild, Tems penned and co-produced the song with Guilty Beatz.

It was all a dream / Just a new girl on the scene / Got your face on magazines,” she sings in the opening verse of the slow-burning R&B song. Singing on, she promises that she’s got a lot to still offer: “But do you care to see? / Plenty fire in my eyes / Just the way I like to be / Will I stay, will I leave?”

Speaking on the message and inspiration behind the song, Tems said: “‘Burning’ is about the feelings I felt when I first started getting popular as Tems. I didn’t really understand what was happening, and everything was happening so fast. And it’s about me looking back on that time and realising that we are all going through something. We all have our internal battles. We all have the things that we struggle with, our triggers. And ‘Burning’ is really about understanding that I have my triggers too, and now I know that I’m not alone. And there’s many people that have felt the way I do about not wanting to be seen, not really being used to attention, and people trying to take advantage of you in many different ways.”

Born In The Wild made history as the most streamed album by a Nigerian female artist in a single day on Spotify with over 8 million streams. At the moment, “Burning” is not accompanied by a music video.

Since making it big globally as a result of her collaboration with fellow Nigerian artist Wizkid on “Essence,” which entered Billboard’s Hot 100 and peaked at the eighth spot, Tems has gone on to achieve success with her other collaborations with the likes of Future, Beyoncé, and Drake.

Even though Born In The Wild was originally slated to have a 2023 release, it was delayed for unknown reasons, with no new date provided at the time. During her performance at Coachella in April, Tems delighted fans with the announcement that her album had been completed and was now ready for release.

On June 7, 2024, the album arrived with 18 tracks. Tems promoted the record by holding private listening sessions in Lagos, Nigeria, London, and Los Angeles. The album will be supported by the “Born In The Wild World Tour.”
