Ashton Irwin – Straight To Your Heart

Having amassed streaming figures that top ten billion during his time in 5 Seconds of Summer, Ashton Irwin, drummer of the pop-rock quartet, is entering a new era as he returns with details of his second solo album. Kicking it off by unveiling “Straight To Your Heart,” the multi-faceted musician draws on his time in the industry for his upcoming project titled BLOOD ON THE DRUMS.

Opening with a catchy riff before hitting listeners with powerful drum beats, the ‘80s new wave-infused track touches on the idea of yearning, accumulating a bittersweet love song, as Irwin confesses his true feelings. “You’ll be my hero here in the dark / Saving my mind from ticking, yeah / Show me the way straight into your heart / Straight to your heart, straight to your heart,” he softly sings in the chorus as the drums swell around his vocals. “No better place but under the stars / When all of the lights are flicking, yeah / Show me the way straight into your heart / Straight to your heart, straight to your heart.”

Inspired by the likes of Echo & The Bunnymen, The Smiths, and Blue Öyster Cult, “Straight To Your Heart” finds Irwin sounding vocally confident as he looks more outward than inward, compared to 2020’s Superbloom, and weaves through the highs and lows of his life over the past decade. “Before I started to make this album, I went back to Australia and… it was very cathartic and good for my soul,” he shares in a live video, now available for playback on his YouTube channel.

“This song, ‘Straight To Your Heart,’ was literally the first song I did with John Feldman,” he later adds. “I walked in the studio, I think it was a Monday afternoon or something, and felt pretty determined to get this vibe going,” he continues.

“At the time, I was really obsessed with this band, Echo & The Bunnymen, they had a song called ‘Lips Like Sugar’. There was also this Smiths song I was obsessed with, ‘Bigmouth Strikes Again’; you can hear that in the acoustic. It’s very aggressive, percussive acoustic guitar playing and it also had this haunting mood to it that I’ve been trying to capture from a song called ‘(Don’t Fear) The Reaper’ by Blue Öyster Cult and these are all really classic tracks!”

Written and produced alongside 5 Seconds of Summer’s frequent collaborator and rock veteran John Feldman (Goldfinger, blink-182, Avril Lavigne, Good Charlotte, Panic! At The Disco), the alt-pop anthem is also accompanied by visuals that find Irwin showcasing even more of his talents. Directed by Ryan Fleming, the video follows Irwin around the California desert on a motorbike and often pans to shots of him taking up archery, both of which he learned prior to the video in order to bring his creative vision to life.

In addition to releasing “Straight To Your Heart,” Irwin will perform a one-night-only show in Los Angeles at the Belasco to promote his upcoming record, BLOOD ON THE DRUMS. The forward-thinking collection will be released in two installments – The Thorns, consisting of the first eight tracks available June 12, and The Roses, which completes the full album, available July 17 – and we can’t wait to see what new route Irwin will be taking this time round.

Speaking of the album, Irwin adds: “I was thinking about the people I left behind, the people I miss, the family that I had to leave when I was young. Thinking about the addictions I’ve been through; the way I evolved as a young man who never had a father. Thinking about my personal strength and knowing that generally speaking no one else has my back but me and becoming someone that I have to be for the rest of my life.”
