PinkPantheress – Turn it up

PinkPantheress’ first release of the year “Turn it up” is literally hyping fans up with its catchy melody and ’90s vibes. But of course, if you’ve been a PinkPantheress fan for any length of time you’ll know that creating earworms is her specialty, and you can best believe she did it again in “Turn it up,” so don’t blame yourself if you hit repeat way too many times.

The British singer-songwriter and producer first teased a snippet of the track in a short clip shared with fans on TikTok on March 29. After facing several requests from fans to drop it as soon as possible, the song was released on all streaming platforms on Friday, May 24.

While PinkPantheress is known for making short songs with one verse – except when she’s doing a collab and her collaborator fills in the second verse – “Turn it up” is kind of a step away from the norm, though I wouldn’t call it a huge step because the song is still well under 3 minutes.

The DJ hit me right there (Right there) / Said he loved me right there (Right there) / Shouted “Shake it” (Shake it) / I ninety-nine percent can’t move my waistline,” she sings in the opening verse, kind of describing a scenario where she – or Maria – falls for someone she met dancing at the club.

This is something she confirms in the second verse, singing, “I won’t tell them I met you in the club (Club, club, club) / You remember our favorite song was playing.” The song samples late Latin-American singer Selena Quintanilla-Pérez’s “Dreaming of You.” While PinkPantheress’ “Turn it up” is about having a connection with someone and having that connection grow into infatuation, Selena’s is about wanting to be with someone so badly all you do is think about them.

“super excited to share my first release of 2024, turn it up, so proud to pay homage to a beautiful song and i hope the people love it too,” PinkPantheress said of the release. There’s no accompanying music video, at least for now, but she released it along with a visualizer.

This is PinkPantheress’ first official release since she dropped her debut album Heaven Knows. Since her single “Boy’s a liar” gained virality, leading to a remix with American rapper Ice Spice, PinkPantheress has been reaching new heights. So far she’s gone on to collaborate with the likes of Central Cee and Rema and accumulate millions of streams across her catalog.
