Perrie – Forget About Us

Since 2011, the world has watched Perrie Edwards go from an X Factor contestant, somewhat shy and timid, to a global music superstar, bold and unwaveringly confident; there’s more where that came from. Beginning what appears to be an unforgettable summer, Perrie is finally stepping into her own as she unveils her long-awaited debut solo single “Forget About Us.” The bittersweet, up-tempo track finds the singer-songwriter re-introducing herself to the world, this time as a solo artist, and being more open about her life experiences as, within the summer-soaked melodies, she refuses to hold back.

The euphoric track, which introduces Perrie as a solo artist to the world, finds the singer-songwriter reflecting on past relationships in a newfound light. “I look back on past relationships and do think happily about those times,” she states in a press release. “Do I want to be there now? No. It didn’t work out that way and if it was supposed to be it would have happened,” she notes. “Relationships have been a huge part of my life and they’ve made me who I am now. I think it’s a nice sentiment to be honest about and it’s super relatable.”

Co-written with Ed Sheeran, Steve Solomon, and legendary songwriter David Hodges (Kelly Clarkson’s “Because of You” and Christina Perri’s “A Thousand Years”), “Forget About Us” finds Perrie showcasing her stunning vocal talent as she belts out each chorus. Fuelled with playful yet vulnerable lyricism detailing fonder memories of previous relationships, Perrie lays her relatable, and nostalgic, feelings bare as she proclaims: “I don’t want you ever to forget about us in the front seat / Listenin’ to songs that made you think about me / Bonfire smoke on your hoodie that I stole from your flat / No, I never gave it back, but / I don’t want you ever to forgеt about us / I know we were nеver perfect, but I think about the life we never had / Yeah, we both found different love, and we’re movin’ on / Let’s leave it buried where it was, but / I don’t want you ever to forget about us.

In going at it alone, Perrie found a new level of confidence within herself as a songwriter, something she used to shy away from during her time in a group. “Going into sessions as a solo artist now and being able to say what I want and I feel is just the most amazing experience,” she shares. “I never had the confidence to do that before, but this process has allowed me to believe in myself and explore all my different emotions and different parts of my life,” she continues. “I’m so proud of what I’ve done and created,” she adds. “I wanted it to be fun above anything else and showcase my singing through ballads and big vocal numbers.”

As she steps away from the pop-dominated world she once knew, Perrie’s unifying thread is her strong, soaring vocals that fearlessly grapple with each melody and top note. Whether sensitive or powerhouse, her distinctive vocals stand proud as she emotes her way through songs, and “Forget About Us” is one hell of an introduction. While the open-hearted track is only the first glimpse into her solo material, it shows a promising change in direction for Perrie, in terms of style and consistency, compared to her Little Mix days and we can’t wait to see where she takes us next.
