Matt Champion & JENNIE – Slow Motion

It was three years in the making and it came out as beautiful as anyone could have hoped. What am I talking about? Matt Champion’s new collab, “Slow Motion,” with BLACKPINK’s JENNIE. Starting up as a Billie Eilish-esque song, it soon morphed into an electronic-influenced sound. While it’s obvious that it’s very experimental in nature, it shows JENNIE’s need to let her creativity breathe, especially with such an encouraging start as her collab with The Weeknd and Lily-Rose Depp, “One Of The Girls.”

For Champion, this track, which was borne of his friendship with the K-pop superstar, marked a departure from his previous releases. While “Slow Motion” marked JENNIE’s first solo release since starting up her own label – a move which was echoed by her other bandmates – Champion has been releasing music since he departed BROCKHAMPTON back in January 2022.

The “dreamy and idyllic” nature of the song, and its drum and bass-type beat, kinda more closely resembles JENNIE’s single “You and Me” than any other music either of them has released so far.

The song is about being in love with someone but feeling like the relationship isn’t progressing fast enough. “Would make it any easier for me to love you? / ‘Cause you know I’m shy for you still / So bad that it kills / And I can’t help but feel / Like we’re moving in slow motion,” Champion and JENNIE sing in the chorus.

“Slow Motion” will feature on Champion’s upcoming record Mika’s Laundry, which has already teased songs “Aphid” and “Slug.”

JENNIE gushed about the collab on Instagram, writing, “Can’t believe this beautiful song is finally out 🌒 This one’s close to my heart and I’m so excited to share its message with you all. Matt and I worked on this song 3 years ago and I hope you guys enjoy it as we share a piece of ourselves.”

Champion also shared his appreciation for working with the Blackpink vocalist, saying, “The time spent making this will always always hold a special place in my heart 💙”

JENNIE had previously shared her dreams of going solo after refusing to re-sign with YG Entertainment to handle her solo projects. Writing on Instagram Story, she shared: “Hi, this is Jennie. This year was filled with many accomplishments, and I’m so thankful for all the love I’ve received,” the K-pop singer wrote on her Instagram Story. “I’m also about what’s to come, as I start my solo journey in 2024 with a company that I have established called OA. Please show lots of love for my new start with OA and of course BLACKPINK. Thank you.”
