Galantis, David Guetta & 5 Seconds of Summer – Lighter

If there’s one thing that 5 Seconds of Summer does well, it’s crafting catchy tunes! After being a band for more than a decade, the Australian quartet continues to push the envelope and challenge themselves with new sounds, genres, and collaborations, and their most recent single, “Lighter,” a collaboration with Galantis and David Guetta, epitomizes that dedication to musical innovation.

The single, which is an energetic and synth-filled daydream, focuses on the feeling of elation within relationships and finds the band trading in their usual unique talent for storytelling and emotional depth for something a little simpler, all in the fashion of the genre of the track. “The tide can pull us away / Don’t matter where we are,” Hemmings sings. “Cause when you’re inches away / Heaven’s never that far.

While the band are often associated with the pop-punk soundscape of their earlier days, “Lighter” is a foray into dance music and demonstrates the band’s adaptability and eagerness to defy the conventional stereotypes given to them over the years; with Galantis and David Guetta by their side, incorporating their distinct styles, the dreamy track is produced in a way that ascends you into another reality with its breezy, danceable beats and infectious sing-along choruses.

Speaking of the track, Galantis’ Christian Karlsson said: “Lighter’ is a special song because the creative momentum between myself, David, and 5SOS aligned so well – we let the collaboration flow into a piece of music that feels emotional and timeless. Michael [Clifford] is such a music lover, very much like me, and working closely with him on producing the live elements like strings, guitar, and drums was very inspiring. And it’s always great working with David! After the amazing response we had with ‘Heartbreak Anthem’ it’s exciting to be putting out another big record together.”

By having the goal to keep reinventing themselves and surprise fans with new content, “Lighter” has done exactly that. It marks an entirely different approach to the music 5 Seconds of Summer have been making over the years and is a refreshing reminder of the versatility the band carries. Albeit, the simple lyricism takes a second to come to terms with following 2022’s 5SOS5, but in this situation, we’ll allow it!
