After the astounding performance of her previous single, “Water,” Tyla would no doubt feel the pressure to keep delivering hits and cement her legacy and her sound. In “Truth or Dare,” Tyla perfectly captures her unique sound to tell the story of a girl who’s given up on a slippery lover.
“Hold on / Did you say you’re on your way ? / Why now? / When you just went MIA / Message received, oh, now you want me back?” she sings in the first verse, “Turn around, that’s too far / Are we too far gone?” In the chorus, she wonders whether the lover views their love as a game of truth or dare. Tyla penned the song with Ari PenSmith, Believve, Sammy Soso, and Mocha Bands.
The South African singer-songwriter has officially been on the music scene since 2019 with the release of her debut single, “Getting Late” featuring artist Kooldrink. Her style of music mixes amapiano, with pop and R&B.
This year, she rose to international fame with the release of her single “Water,” which went viral on TikTok as a result of a challenge known as the “Water” challenge. This recreation of Tyla’s dancing set to the song sent it racing up the charts in over a dozen countries, including the US, UK, and Australia. It also marked the first time that a song from a South African soloist entered the Billboard Hot 100 charts in 55 years.
Following the success of “Water,” Tyla announced that she will be dropping a self-titled debut album soon. “Been working on the full project for 2 years now and I’ve finally gotten to a point where I’m ready to share it with my Tygers top of 2024,” she told fans on X. However, a new album is not all that she’s got for fans in 2024, as she plans to tour the UK, Europe, and North America early next year. The tour will kick off in Oslo on March 21 and will stop at major cities including Stockholm, Berlin, Paris, Amsterdam, and London, before branching over to the American leg of the tour on April 22.
This year has been a remarkable one for the 21-year-old, from putting on her first public performance during the Dolce & Gabbana after-party at Milan Fashion Week 2023 to earning her first chart placements with “Water.” 2024 seems ready and set to bear more glad tidings for the South African singer and performer.
