Nicki Minaj is back with a brand new song she claims will be relatable to everyone in the world. “Last Time I Saw You” is noticeably different from her other releases for its toned-down indie-inspired instrumental. It’s about falling out of contact with someone you loved, and probably still do. The sentimental song will be featured on her upcoming fifth studio album, Pink Friday 2, which is a sequel to her Grammy-nominated debut album Pink Friday.
“Beggin’ me to stay, and then you walk away / There’s something that you wanted to say / I was in a rush, but you said you were crushed / And I said, ‘I’d be back, it’s okay,’” she sings in the pop-rap style track about what it feels like to let a relationship once shared with a close friend go. When it came to the rap, Minaj served some hot rhymes, “Them nights we wish never ended / Those rules that we wish we bended / Heartbreak that we never mended / Those messages we unsended / Best friends we somehow unfriended.”
“Even tho reliving the memories did feel ‘sad,’ after I wrote, recorded, [and] lived [with] it, it actually made me pay more attention to the people I still DO have, and how important it is to cherish them and have fun NOW in the moment,” she wrote on X about how penning the track made her feel. “Telling them how much you adore them, etc. [It] made me so happy.”
Minaj began her solo musical year with the release of “Red Ruby Da Sleaze,” which follows her 2022 massively successful single, “Super Freaky Girl.”
Writing via a newsletter, Minaj thanked her fans for their love and support, adding, “I have not been excited about the release of a song to this extent for maybe… I don’t know I can’t even tell you, I don’t even remember when! I hope that it’s therapeutic for you. I hope that even after, it makes you reflect and that if you are reflecting on a time, or a person that you wish you could go back in time and have a do over etc… I hope that you are still able to smile at the end of the song by realizing that you now have a chance to treat the people that you love, that are still in your life the way that expresses to them what they mean to you.”
She went on to assure her fans that Pink Friday 2 will be the best album that’s been released in years.
