The K-pop group VANNER has returned with its album VENI VIDI VICI, and the EP includes the electrifying focus track “Performer.” In music, there are plenty of songs about being famous, especially about the pitfalls that fame brings to creatives. Instead of choosing this route, VANNER embraces positivity with “Performer,” a song that explores the members’ optimism about the group’s rising star power in the music world.
Taehwan, Gon, Hyesung, Sunggook, and Yeonggwang first debuted in VANNER in 2019, and the release of VENI VIDI VICI comes on the heels of the group winning the popular JBTC reality idol survival show Peak Time. VENI VIDI VICI is the K-pop group’s first EP, and it marks a new era for the band, making “Performer” one of the most important tracks of the group’s career.
Through its lyrics, “Performer” captures the exciting energy that Taehwan, Gon, Hyesung, Sunggook, and Yeonggwang feel when they take the stage in front of their fans, VVS.
“I’m your performer / My heart is dancing / Look closely / What you waiting for, baby / I’m your, I’m your performer / Everything and everywhere / Feel my burning heart, baby / I’m your, I’m your performer,” the group sings in the song’s addictive chorus.
Since the group’s debut, the members of VANNER have played a heavy role in the creation of their music, and “Performer” is no exception with Sunggook participating in writing the song’s rap. By staying involved in the making of “Performer,” VANNER stays true to its roots while exploring a new career direction.
Production-wise, “Performer” is a sleek dance-pop track with a pulsating synth beat throughout. With each chorus, the music grows bolder without overpowering the members’ singing.
Along with the song itself, VANNER also released a music video for “Performer” starring the group’s five members. A majority of the song’s music video shows Taehwan, Gon, Hyesung, Sunggook, and Yeonggwang dancing to the song while wearing various black outfits in a large white room. As they show off their dance skills, robotic arms wave Vanner’s signature flag over their heads.
In other scenes, the members wear sailor outfits and are seen on a sound stage designed to be a sailing ship’s deck surrounded by makeshift waves, representing the band’s voyage themes. Toward the end of the music video, Taehwan, Gon, Hyesung, Sunggook, and Yeonggwang dance in sailor outfits to the song’s final chorus as white confetti falls around them.
With “Performer,” Vanner showcases that the song and VENI VIDI VICI are the first steps on a new musical journey.
