Selena Gomez – Single Soon

I think we should just rename this Friday to “Disney Music Friday” because the Disney kids are back in business and they’re not playing. If Demi Lovato’s remixes didn’t arrive a week earlier, the three of them would have had a really awesome reunion on the charts. The two who did release on the same day, however, were Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, as if you didn’t already know.

Gomez wants us all to say goodbye to summer together with “Single Soon,” a pop song that celebrates everything about the single independent woman, man, or any other gender in between. However, we’re not only celebrating all the things we can do in this single era, we’re also celebrating the joys of anticipation: Who will the next lover be? In a way, it kind of reminds me of Gomez’s own song, “Boyfriend.” No, no man was turned into a frog this time.

In the first verse of the song, Gomez ponders how she should break the news of their breakup to a boyfriend she knows will be inconsolable once he hears the news. “Should I do it on the phone? / Should I leave a little note / In the pocket of his coat? (Yeah) / Maybe I’ll just disappear / I don’t wanna see a tear / And the weekend’s almost here.” The thought of announcing their breakup, however, doesn’t dampen her expectations of having a fantastic weekend, and she giddily picks out her shoes and dress.

In the accompanying music video, Gomez is all bubbly energy as she celebrates a night out with her girlfriends, without caring about the couples at the bar they’re in. From frolicking in a pool to singing karaoke with her friends, it’s making us single ladies appreciate what we have even more, and we already appreciate it enough as it is.

At the end, Gomez cheekily asks, “Well, who’s next” while winking at us through the music video. Yeah, like we hear at the beginning of the video, “Never worry about boyfriends, at all.”

The single was originally supposed to be a part of her last album, Rare, but was discarded. However, the song evidently had enough potential for it to be reworked, and voila, a new Selena Gomez song. “Y’all have been asking for new music for a while. Since I’m not quite done with SG3, I wanted to put out a fun little song I wrote a while back that’s perfect for the end of summer,” she said in the announcement message for the single.

The files of the leaked snippet suggest the song deals with how Gomez broke the news of their breakup to fellow singer-songwriter The Weeknd.
