The queens of bop have united to make a song that will leave listeners wanting to hit replay one more time, over and over again. Mae Stephens went viral on TikTok earlier this year with a snippet of her single “If We Ever Broke Up,” and I doubt any of us can easily forget that Meghan Trainor set us dancing to “Made You Look” for months. So yeah, there’s hardly ever been a better combo for a song.
“Mr. Right” is a song about looking for the perfect lover, but doing it in a way that suggests you’re not worked up about it and you’re more than ready to be alone for the rest of your life if need be. Well, kinda.
“I’ve been on my own / I’ve been on my own for a while / I’ve been puttin’ off / Givin’ someone else all my time,” Stephens sings in the opening verse of moving on from the wrong guy and preparing to seek out the right one.
“’Cause, baby, you’re not the best / Boy, you’re missin’ out on that zest / I don’t think I’ll be taking that quest / So, I’ll be swiping on to the rest,” they song in the abundantly catchy chorus. The song is accompanied by an animated lyric video that sees them swiping left for all the people who don’t make the cut, and believe me, they are picky.
Speaking via a press release, Trainor shared her joy to have been called on to sing on the track with Stephens, who she confessed she’s been fangirling over for a while. “I am beyond honored that Mae asked me to be a part of this song!! I am convinced that she is my long-lost little sister, and I am so excited that we now get to have a song together. And you won’t see Stephens looking ungrateful, because the rising star was all happy energy when she reflected on getting to collab with her idol.
