If you’re wondering what Ty Dolla $ign is doing on a newly released Lauren Jauregui song when they split like three years ago, we’ve got a theory; this song was recorded five years ago.
“Thank you for being such amazing friends and believing in me & this project enough to be a part of it even though we made Wolves 5 years ago😂,” Jauregui wrote on Instagram. “Love you both.”
“Wolves” is the closing track to Jauregui’s EP In Between, her second project since she embarked on her solo music career following Fifth Harmony’s announcement of a hiatus in 2018. The song is about the challenges that can come one’s way in life. It also speaks of the courage we need to keep going no matter how rough things get. “There comes a time in every man’s life / When he gotta handle shit up on his own / You can’t depend on your friends when you in a tight squeeze / Everybody got problems of they own / I gotta get it how I live, no matter how tough it is,” Ty Dolla $ign raps, later going on to add that he’s lost bros “to the system.”
He later sums up the courage to keep going in spite of the odds stacked against him as he raps, “Anythin’ that I don’t have right now, I plan to build it / And anybody tryna shake me, bitch, I’m standin’ still.”
Russ also took to his own Instagram to say that he was “super hesitant” about releasing the song with the same old verses from “5 years ago,” and it caused him to hold it up for several months. “I wanted to change it and ‘update it, but I sat with it and realized that I can’t go back and change anything in the past, so why disrespect the artist I was and change what his original vision for the verse was?” he wrote. It was a good thing that he didn’t because fans appreciated the song and the emotional message it relates.
It was so emotionally appealing it inspired a fan to say this, “Played on repeat to comprehend the lyrics filled with layers of emotions. Powerful with self-affirming strength to persevere through obstacles and maintain balance to overcome disappointing and upsetting life experiences. Heavy emotional tune with a triumph destination insight.”
The song was written by Jauregui, Ty Dolla $ign, Russ, Khristopher Riddick-Tynes, and Leon Thomas III, and produced by Riddick-Tynes and Thomas III.
