If you’re a Euphoria fan, it is almost guaranteed you said, “OMG Labrinth’s new track sounds so familiar!” last Friday. Then you went down a rabbit hole trying to figure out where you’d heard the song before and why Billie Eilish’s vocals brought back so many memories… welp, we can definitely say we did the exact same thing. For the first 10 listens we were clueless but then it clicked, “I Never Felt So Alone” was featured in an earlier clip of the HBO award-winning show ages ago.
After that rollercoaster of emotions, reality sets in and you realize, how worth it it was to wait for this to be out. Labrinth really outdid himself on this one. The beat is infections and it’s impossible not to bop your head along with it. As expected from the Grammy winner, the song slaps, however, it is the raw emotion added by another Grammy winner’s vocals that really set this track apart. The combination of Billie and Labrinth conveys the pain and loneliness intended in the song – and it hits you right in the gut.
The lyrics are super real and relatable, too. Labrinth and Eilish sing about feeling lost and disconnected from the world, something we can all relate to at one point or another. Lines like “I’m walking the streets, but I’m not really there” and “I’m fighting my demons, but they’re winning the fight” hit especially hard.
The track is certainly incredible but so is the music video. Just like other Billie videos, it is stunning and trippy. Perfectly capturing the vibe of the song, the shots of Labrinth and Billie in a forever-shifting screen where everything is grey and white and people are being held and captured by chains (mirroring the overwhelming force of one’s own mental chains) are particularly striking. Undoubtedly worth watching.
Labrinth will be performing at Coachella 2023 and we cannot wait to see him jump full force on stage with this new release. Thousands of fans will certainly sing their lungs out during his set and who knows, maybe some featured artists might jump on stage with I’m too.
All in all, “Never Felt So Alone” is a total vibe, and we’re so glad it’s finally out in the world. It’s a testament to Labrinth’s talent as a producer and songwriter, and we can’t wait to see what he does next.
