Tori Kelly – missin u

After a lengthy hiatus, Grammy Award-winner Tori Kelly has returned with a bang unveiling her Y2K-inspired single “missin u,” which is a guaranteed smash.

The Jon Bellion-produced track channels a bubbly pop-R&B vibe that makes listeners nostalgic for the early 2000s. In fact, according to WhoSampled, the song samples Craig David’s 2000 hit “Fill Me In.”

“missin u” definitely sounds like something the singer-songwriter would’ve put out back in the early 2000s. It’s almost like she’s getting to live out what would’ve been. The vibes of the track are perfectly fit for her.

“It was the perfect night night kissin’ you / Was rainin’ purple skies in my room / Me and you / Baby I’m missin you / Oooh I’m missin you,” Kelly sings in the catchy chorus. It makes you think of that special someone.

The accompanying visual directed by Marc Klasfeld features Kelly dawning a new, darker hairstyle  cycling through a couple of fresh looks – ranging from a white ribbed ensemble (my favorite), a silver puffer coat, and a red leather outfit.  The music video is bold, colorful, and the perfect way to showcase the single. It also references to the 90s video aesthetics with the historic fisheye lens and artists like Janet Jackson and Missy Elliot.

Besides that, she broke out some slight dance moves in the music video which showcases a new side of the artist.

Tori has always had something special about her. She’s always been on a journey of self-discovery outwardly, inwardly, and even musically. As a fan since the very beginning it has been such a joy seeing her grow into the artist she is today.

Kelly’s musical hiatus gave her time to reclaim herself as an artist and develop her skills even further. Fans asked and she delivered with a new sound that will surely capture the hearts of new listeners alike.

To think “missin u” is just a taste of what we can expect in the new era, welcome to what is known as ‘Tori Kelly season.” We are here for it.
