British girl group FLO continues to be the standout of 2023 with their latest work, “Fly Girl.”
Featuring well-renowned American rapper Missy Elliot, FLO’s first single of 2023 proves why the BRIT Rising Star and BBC Sound of 2023 winners are the girl group everyone is talking about. Being long-life fans of Elliott, sampled, “Work It” and found inspiration in the lyrics, “If you’re a fly gal / get your nails done/get a pedicure / get your hair did,” the rising trio were in luck as Elliott was quick to help the girls out and provide an addictive original rap that sits perfectly within the hit single. “They used the inspiration from my song ‘Work It’, and I felt they did it justice. I enjoyed it, and I believe they have a long, great career ahead of them,” said Elliott herself.
Though we can’t ignore the sudden surprises of Elliot making a feature, FLO undeniably has talent. With the presentation of immaculate harmonies overlayed by the pulsating beats (helped by the one and only MNEK) – fans delve into the aces of old-school R&B coinciding with girl group popsicle production. Hinted by the loved influences of the Sugababes and Destiny’s Child with modern love, SZA, and you, could say a little sprinkle of Little Mix, FLO’s “Fly Girl” is a perfect example of power.
Speaking of their latest work, FLO defined “Fly Girl” as an “embodiment of strength, empowerment, attitude, and community. She/he/they/them/ are not shaped by what society deems beautiful or acceptable but a member of an inclusive environment that accepts and embraces femininity in all its glory. We are hardworking independent fly girls who get the job done and have fun while doing it.”
Accompanied by the official video, fans are treated to a teaser of what to expect from a Flo party as they invite them to a storm of independency, 2000 nostalgia, and music that sits perfectly in the final backdrop of a girl group knowing their worth as everyone parties in the fog of haze.
With summer festival slots, sold-out headline shows, awards, and records coming left, right, and center, FLO has only slightly dipped into the waters of music, but as they go from strength to strength, who knows what will happen? Whilst we have “Fly Girl” on repeat, we are sure they have a few surprises up their sleeves as they plunge deep in the coming months, and we cannot wait!
