WizTheMc — Where Silence Feels Good

4.5

WizTheMc is about to become your new obsession! The Toronto-based singer-songwriter and producer has just released his latest EP, Where Silence Feels Good, following What About Now? It features past singles as well as three new tracks, including his new single “Premature Love,” an upbeat pop track with Outkast vibes. The song is all about that universal feeling of the beginning stages of having feelings for someone — all the excitement, giddiness, and even insecurities.

“I wrote ‘Premature Love’ after I met this girl in LA that I really liked,” he says. “I remember sweating during the writing session of this song cause it felt so personal — almost too personal to be put into a song. Even after the song was finished, I never showed it to her … which was maybe why it never worked out.”

The music video, which also premiered today, shows Wiz waking up, dancing, and singing around his retro house while getting ready for the date. Toward the end of the video, the fourth wall is broken and the viewers are on a date with Wiz.

If I’m honest / I wanna call you mine / Only been a week / But I’m sure inside.”

Where Silence Feels Good gives listeners a mix of upbeat pop songs, like “Everything,” which is the perfect opener for the EP and for a summer day at the beach, but also highlights Wiz as a songwriter who isn’t afraid to open up. “Do It Over” is an acoustic track where Wiz laments over a past relationship. “When darkness turns to dawn / I’m on my way home / Haven’t seen you in like two months / Been sinking in my chair / And thinking if you still wear / My sweater that I left at your place.” Most notable are the strings toward the end of the song, slowly building into a captivating, heartbreaking melody.

His last single, “Stoned Nights,” is reminiscent of early 2000s pop, giving off a nostalgic vibe. “‘Stoned Nights’ is a reflection on a past relationship,” Wiz explains. “It reminisces on moments that led to the first butterflies and condemns memories of pain and grief that followed after the heartbreak. Another crucial chapter of Where Silence Feels Good, an EP that takes you through all the highs and lows of a romantic relationship.”

The EP closes with “Empty Handed,” which is guitar- and vocal-heavy with enchanting harmonies in the bridge that will tug at your heartstrings. It’s the perfect track, full of pining and unrequited love. “She just wants to be my friend / And I don’t understand why / I can’t lie / It sucks that we met.”

Born in South Africa and raised in Germany, Wiz has been releasing music since 2018. His last EP What About Now?, released in 2020, amassed over 50 million streams globally. His breakout single “For a Minute” was featured on Grey’s Anatomy as well as the Netflix original movie He’s All That, starring TikTok star Addison Rae. With this new EP, Wiz’s goal was to grow as a songwriter, taking notes from rappers like Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole.

Last year, Wiz performed at Austin City Limits as well as sold-out shows in Germany, where he was raised. In support of the EP, he’s hitting the stage in Los Angeles, New York, and Toronto.
