Adele returns after six years with a powerful signature ballad just as beautiful and emotional as we could have hoped. In “Easy on Me,” Adele stuns with unreal vocals throughout and has fans entirely in their feelings. The track was co-written and produced by Greg Kurstin who also worked on the star’s award-winning “Hello” in 2015.
The lyrics are poignant and full of realness about trying as hard as possible for a relationship, for a family, but knowing there’s only so much that can be done. “You can’t deny how hard I’ve tried / I changed who I was to put you both first / but now I give up.” In the chorus, Adele alludes to having been too young to enter a serious relationship without having experienced the world enough: “Go easy on me, baby / I was still a child / Didn’t get the chance to feel the world around me.”
Adele’s music video for “Easy on Me,” released at midnight UK time, has already racked up over 29 million views and 2 million likes as of this writing. As one of the most anticipated returns to music, Adele certainly has the audience ready to go through heartbreak with her. In the video, we see the British singer leaving her packed-up house behind and driving to her future. The video, which starts in black and white and soars to color midway through the song, has powerful imagery of family, marriage, and friendship as well as sheets of music flying out the car window.
The star’s upcoming album 30, which was announced this week, will be released on Nov 19. During her first-ever Instagram Live, Adele answered a fan’s question about the subject of 30 saying it’s about, “Divorce, babe, divorce.” In the singer’s statement about her upcoming album, Adele penned, “I’ve learned a lot of blistering home truths about myself along the way. I’ve shed many layers but also wrapped myself in new ones. Discovered genuinely useful and wholesome mentalities to lead with, and I feel like I’ve finally found my feeling again. I’d go so far as to say that I’ve never felt more peaceful in my life.”
