Mehro’s latest single “Coastline” is a groovy bop with serene undertones to have you feeling nostalgic and hyped up for the future at the same time. Slippery beats paired with Mehro’s bristly, vulnerable vocals give us all the feels. He sings, “we don’t have to be afraid,” and “we were born to be bold in this life,” and we believe him.
The genre-bending musician is sincere when he talks to us- something that is missing with most artists who are trying to portray a certain image. Instead, we find relief when hearing from Mehro, he shows us his true self at all times, and especially in his music. We got to talk to the angsty singer-songwriter about following your dreams, looking ahead, and writing “Coastline.”
Where do you see your listeners when they hear “Coastline”?
I see people who are about to make a huge decision in their lives. Or people who have started their journey and are in a difficult chapter. Or maybe someone who has just accomplished something they have always dreamed of doing. Or maybe someone who didn’t accomplish their dream. I see them all. And I say to you, keep going. Just keep going. One step at a time. One day at a time. Keep going.
What sparked the idea of the song? What was the writing process like?
It was a beautiful night, and I could see the Malibu mountains in the distance, and those lights shining on the hills and on the shore. And it made me think of someone who I could no longer speak to and I realized that if you set a dream for yourself, and you move toward it, then you are already living your dream. The dream being chased is the reward.
It’s the nourishment, it’s the fulfillment. A lot of people don’t believe in themselves– they don’t believe they are worthy of their dream so they don’t pursue them, which only guarantees them not coming true. So I wrote the song for a person who I wish believed and loved themselves. The writing process was slightly painful and also very rewarding. Finding the purest communication was key, and it felt great to get there.
How would you describe your sound and vibe?
Pure, vulnerable, sincere, centered, grounded and ethereal.
If your music could be on any tv show, movie, or game which would it be?
Perks of Being a Wallflower, Good Will Hunting, Trainspotting, Breaking Bad, The Sopranos, Grand Theft Auto.
Who and what are some of your inspirations? Where do you go when you’re looking for inspiration?
Anyone or anyplace that intrigues me. Someone or something that pulls me in and brings me into their world so that I can explore it. It’s all kinds of people, all kinds of things. But it’s the unspeakable, impossible to describe, gut response and the way that something makes me feel– that forces me to write and create.
I usually go to a place in my mind. Somewhere I’ve been before, who’s energy I can use to achieve what I am looking for.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to making these music videos for all of these songs that I have coming. I am looking forward to eating tonight. I am looking forward to rehearsing. I am looking forward to writing and finishing a song that’s been on my mind the last few days. I’m looking forward to responding to comments. I’m looking forward to being with my family.
That is such a beautiful question because I believe having something to look forward to is a joy of life that I imagine every person has experienced at least once in their lives. And it creates so many wonderful feelings in our minds.
