24-year-old New Zealand singer Lorde aka the gift that keeps on giving, has shared “Mood Ring,” – the third single off her upcoming album Solar Power out later this week.
Following the release of the nostalgic “Stoned at the Nail Salon” last month and the dreamy “Solar Power” in June, “Mood Ring” is a groovy and tranquil song that plays on the ideas of “wellness culture and the search for spiritual meaning in our modern world,” Lorde explained in an email newsletter to fans. So far, all three singles Lorde has released have really shown her progression as a songwriter and artist. She’s always had a way with words with her songs, but this new era for her feels like a new chapter – one that’s melancholic and chill, where she’s really growing in her music and sharing her feelings freely.
“I can’t feel a thing / I keep looking at my mood ring” she sings at the chorus, backed by instrumentals reminiscent of the early 2000s. “Tell me how I’m feeling / Floating away, floating away.” In the song’s music video, Lorde takes on a character in a blonde wig dressed in light green. Surrounded by five other women also dressed in similar green outfits, the group gather around together, burning sage, doing meditation, you name it.
“It goes without saying I feel tons of empathy for this character,” Lorde continues to explain in her newsletter about the song’s visuals. “…We’re living through wild times, and it’s tough to begrudge anyone the methods they employ to feel sane, questionable though they may be.” Filled with satirical references, the video compliments the song’s lyrics well, while also giving off escapist vibes to match the light melody of the track. Whatever your mood may be, be sure to sit back, relax, and stream “Mood Ring” before Solar Power is released.
Lorde’s new album Solar Power is out on August 20th. Until then, you can check out the album’s already released tracks, including “Mood Ring,” below.
