If you ask any ARMY, they’ll tell you that BTS can do no wrong and that each new song is better than the last. The world’s most famous K-pop group pushes themselves with every new release, and “Butter” is no different. This, the band’s second all-English release, is not only a certified bop, but it shows how much work each member of the seven-member group has put into refining their English — absolutely not their native language — simply to better connect with the English-speaking market and bring more music to their fans.
Because no one loves their fans quite like BTS loves ARMY.
“Butter” is an earworm at its finest with its upbeat melody and bright, cheeky lyrics. Co-written by Rob Grimaldi, Stephen Kirk, Ron Perry, Jenna Andrews, Alex Bilowitz, and Sebastian Garcia, along with RM himself, the song sets itself up to be one of the best songs of the summer (and perhaps the rest of the year).
The song with clear nods to innocent love even sends a little nod to ARMY, with the lyric, “Got ARMY right behind us when we say so,” which I love to see.
A song quite literally called “Butter” could have easily gone south really fast and been over-the-top cheesy or weird, but the beauty of BTS is they know how to toe that line and keep songs light and charming without falling into a trap of weirdness. The chorus — “Smooth like (Butter), cool shade (Stunner) / And you know we don’t stop / Hot like (Summer), ain’t no (Bummer) / You be like, oh my God” — shows that cheek, amid the bouncy beat and synthy goodness.
In true BTS fashion, the music video is chock-full of fun choreography, with each of the members flitting around with rainbow-colored hair and slick wardrobe. The video quite literally broke the YouTube record for views in 24 hours — roughly 113 million — topping their own record for “Dynamite.” It’s almost hard to believe that BTS continues to get bigger and bigger, and yet they do. And through it all, these seven guys remain devoted to their craft and to ARMY and it’s honestly pretty damn beautiful to witness.
