Canadian star Ruth B. has delivered her first release of 2021, “Situation.”
The woozy R&B track starts off as an acoustic piano ballad and quickly picks up its pace as a slow jam. As always, Ruth’s vocals are warm and soulful. Its lyrical content is very relatable as the songstress questions a complicated relationship throughout the chorus: “I’ve been wondering what’s been going on / What’s our situation? / Hanging on and on and on to every conversation / I wanna let go, but it’s so complicated / Baby, all I’m saying is what’s the situation?”
There have been many highs to Ruth’s career. However, she feels confident that “Situation” is her all-time favorite song she’s ever written. “It sounds so much like me, and where I am now versus a few years ago,” she explained in her press release.
“Writing songs has always been therapeutic for me,” Ruth said, adding, “and I hope that hearing my songs helps other people in the same way. Whether they’re feeling lonely or heartbroken or happy, I want them to know that someone else understands what they’re going through.”
Its music video, which was directed by Annie Bercy, was beautifully shot. Ruth can be seen to be in her feelings in a bedroom-style setting. While thinking about her relationship, she writes down notes in her diary, screws up the pages, can be seen having conversations on the phone, jumps up and down on her bed, and lets out her teary emotions.
“Situation” will be taken from Ruth’s second studio album, Moments in Between. The LP will consist of 11 tracks, including the previously released song, “Dirty Nikes.” The album is scheduled to drop on June 11 via Downtown Records. It will be her first studio album since 2017’s Safe Heaven and the first project since her 2019 Maybe I’ll Find You Again EP.
