“Spells” is the latest single from British singer-songwriter Greentea Peng. The rising star has released several songs this year and is rounding off 2020 with this stunning number. Greentea Peng isn’t afraid to get personal and political with her lyrics while singing on soulful/jazzy beats.
The highlight of “Spells” is its dreamy chorus that hears her deliver the lyrics in such a meditative manner: “You and me / putting spells on we / words of negativity / fucking our reality.”
The mesmerizing track was written around the release of her debut EP, SENSI, and was produced by Kiko and Samo.
When talking about the song, the songstress explained the inspiration behind it in a statement: “On a lighter note, to end the year I release ‘spells’ AKA beg friend. Written around SENSI times, I guess this one explores the idea of tribalism and the want / illusion or desire to please everyone, thus gain acceptance. The process of traveling through that and coming out of the other end rather comfortable in yourself. As someone who has struggled as a yute with wanting to ‘fit in’ this was kind of a final purge of that stage in my ego development. But also it’s about the idea of casting spells with negative language and behaviors we adopt and use about/ towards our peers. Words are vibrations at the end of the day and it’s called S P E L L I N G for a reason.”
Released on her birthday, the eye-catching music video was shot in South London and directed by Machine Operated.
In October, Greentea Peng made her television debut on Later… With Jools Holland and wowed viewers with her raw talent.
The past couple of years have just been the beginning of what’s to come. Greentea Peng will embark on a huge European tour next year and is gearing up for the release of her debut studio album, which will no doubt create a huge buzz.
