Halsey – Nightmare

Halsey’s new track “Nightmare” is an anthem of anger and liberation. Halsey suffers from a particular plague that tends to follow any high-profile woman who dares be vocal and unafraid. It seems like her listeners often search for any excuse to hate on her or tear her down from her obvious success. And no, she is not perfect. That is what this song is about.

It seems more and more that the women of our generation have grown fed up with sitting quietly and watching decisions be made that directly affect them without having any say in the matter. I don’t think I have to get too far into what I am referring to. Suffice to say, when Halsey croons, “Come on little lady, give us a smile. No, I ain’t got nothing to smile about,” it is relatable to the point that it’s impossible not to get a bit emotional over the sentiment.

The first time a strange man asked me to smile from the window of his car, I was 14 years old, and I was confused. Then over time, I became uncomfortable, then afraid. Halsey sings, “I’m tired and angry, but somebody should be.” That somebody is Halsey in this new single, but she is not alone. We are all tired. We are all angry. We are all ready to wake up from the nightmare.
