Charli XCX and Troye Sivan join pop-juggernaut forces for new throwback single, “1999.” The English experimental pop singer teased the playful bop last week, then the two announced the collaboration via Twitter, excitedly teasing each other before fully releasing it today on October 5th.
Just as the title suggests, the track features an array of fun 90’s references like the infamous Britney Spears’ “Hit Me Baby One More Time” and “Listening to Shady.” The cover art itself involves Charli XCX and South African electro-pop singer Troye Sivan on a lime green background, clad in long black vinyl trenchcoats, 90s sunglasses, and biker boots, the pair has gone full Matrix collaboration with the artwork.
Charli XCX is known for collaborating with some of the biggest names in pop, so her catchy venture with Troye comes as no surprise. This year alone, she’s had a run of stellar singles including “5 in the Morning,” “Focus,” “No Angel,” and “Girls Night Out.” The new track also follows from Sivan’s debut album Bloom. Charli’s last release, Pop 2, arrived last year.
