“With this song, I tried to capture the feeling of when you’re about to kiss someone for the first time.” explains Matt Woods, “I love the idea that someone who can be your biggest comfort can also be your greatest fear.”
Blending his incredible vocal with a sharp but smooth production, Matt Woods makes a welcome return with “Nervous.” There’s something instantly memorable about this new sound and a feeling that this time away has turned Matt from a young talent into a force to be reckoned with.
Nervous is the first track to be revealed from Matt Woods’ upcoming EP Re:Connection; a follow-up to November’s “Ain’t No Use.” In the 8 months between, Matt rekindled an old love and “Nervous” explores their first time meeting up and the fear that comes with reigniting something that means so much.
Check out our interview with Matt below:
How’d you get started in music? Did you grow up in a musical household?
Yeah I did, my mum’s side of the family is very musical. My Grandad was a music teacher, my mum performed on the west end and my uncle is a concert pianist. So I’m just carrying on the family business!
What or who has inspired you most thus far?
I am regularly inspired by fellow independent artists; Bon Iver, Chance The Rapper, James Vincent McMorrow, Tom Misch. Particularly those that are actively reshaping the way music is released and deals are done. These artists are doing so while also releasing some of my favourite albums/EPs of the last few years. Its something to aspire to!
Tell us about your latest release, “Nervous.”
“Nervous” is about how that person who can make you feel the most calm can also make you feel the most vulnerable. I’ve tried to create a feeling of tension in the song, as though you’re about to kiss that person for the first time in a long time.
What’s next? Is an album? Possibly a tour?
The rest of this year I will be releasing music. I have 5 or 6 songs I want to put out in the form of EPs or singles. They are all pretty much ready to go. Other than that I’ll be focused on writing next year’s material – ideally an album, yes! I don’t know how much I can say about touring right now, but I think there will be one or two shows towards the end of this year, with a full tour in 2018.
What are you most looking forward to this summer? …Or at least what’s left of it?
I’m playing Boardmasters in Newquay this weekend, which is in my hometown. I have some local friends and family coming along, so that will be a good day! After that it’s back to the studio every day!
Who are some newer artists you’ve been loving?
Loyle Carner, Charlotte Day Wilson, Ry X, Asgeir, Akua Naru, Tingsek, Courtney Marie Andrews, Bruno Major, Kentaur, Flores, Couros…..
I love asking this because I can get some weird ass responses: What was your last Google search?
“How to make Turkish coffee”
Lastly, if you had the ultimate celebrity power, what would be on your list of backstage necessities?
Whiskey and water. And a swimming pool filled with jelly – always wanted to know.
