The live music video for “Greenwoods Bethlehem” by British folk band Bear’s Den is a compilation of footage captured from various venues since the release of their album, Red Earth and Pouring Rain. The video is in black and white and the scenic shots of the hanging lights, the crowd and the close up aesthetic filler shots of guitars hold hands with the subtle beauty of the track. Thereby opting for an alternate focus instead of potentially distracting or taking away from the song, as it might, if it were shot in colour.
The song is already a beautiful proclamation of lost love but somehow transcends that in this live version. It is an honest representation of catharsis through art as lead singer Andrew Davie describes to us his bleeding heart whilst accompanied by a flurry of transitional shots to capture the desperate tone of the tune. Davie sings, “So many things I tried to tell you, so many things I tried to say but my words all fall like empires into the ocean.” This perpetuates that sense of finalized loss that comes with a blindsided breakup. However, this song is not only about the defeat but also the comeback and how to live with this emptiness and take comfort in the pain.
Bear’s Den are currently on tour in the UK and will eventually expand to the rest of Europe come summertime.
