Sufjan Stevens’ album Carrie & Lowell is a yearning and reflective work that deals heavily with the nature of family and love. The track “Blue Bucket of Gold” is traditional Sufjan fare, heartbreaking, guitar driven, and in his lilting soft voice. However, Stevens’ recently released a video of a new take on “Blue Buckets of Gold”
Stevens’ and R&B singer Gallant have been touring together and have previously covered Drake’s “Hotline Bling.” In the video Gallant provides the main vocals, his voice soaring into breathtaking high notes, while Stevens’ provides backing harmony and accompaniment on the piano. The video itself is sparse and dimly lit, maintaining all the focus on the artists. “Blue Bucket of Gold” takes on a new life in another artist’s voice, allowing us to see new moments in the music we may have missed as we grew accustomed to the original version.
Both the original and Gallant’s version are incredible tracks, and to be sure Carrie & Lowell is an album that truly does not disappoint. However, we can’t wait to see what these two team up to do next. Check out the video of Stevens’ and Gallant’s collaboration below!
