D/C – I Love Gold

“If there was one thing you could ask for in the world, she turned around and said, ‘I love gold’”

If “Gold Digger” by Kanye West and Jamie Foxx is an aggressive and borderline cheesy expression of what it means when a person enters a relationship with only material goods in mind, then “I Love Gold” is the classy version with tantalizing strings and a solid vocal performance by D/C. This is an extremely seductive track with a catchy chorus that features a female saying in a matter-of-fact voice, “I love gold” followed by D/C soulfully singing “superficial.”

Sometimes there are songs you listen to and the instrumentals and lyrics don’t really share any special connection with each other. That’s not the case here. Gold has been a valuable commodity forever and the instrumentals do a fantastic job of capturing their mysterious allure. You know what else has a lot of allure? Someone trying their best to seduce a rich person for his/her money. The entire package just works really well; going back to that “Gold Digger” analogy, “I Love Gold” is (sort of) like the precocious child of “Gold Digger” and “Can’t Feel My Face” by The Weeknd.

The ultimate victory here is what D/C accomplishes in the music video. It’s basically a montage of women and jewelry from movies, TV shows, and commercials. I knew this song and I were meant to be together when the video briefly showed a clip from The Sopranos where Carmela chucks an expensive vase at Tony – I watched that same episode for the first time right before I watched the music video for the first time. Now that’s just golden.
