Lana Del Rey – High By The Beach

“The truth is I never bought into your bullshit when you pay tribute to me cause I know that all I want to do is get high by the beach, get high, baby baby, bye bye.”

Lana Del Rey seems to have thrown in a contender for “Song of the Summer” with her second new single “High by the Beach” off her upcoming album Honeymoon.

Opening with helicopter sounds and Del Rey harmonizing the song’s hook, the song has a sad but laid back, electronic synth background. Her vocals are whispery, higher in range yet still has that dreamy romantic quality that appeals to many. Unlike some of her previous singles, this  one is more upbeat and very catchy. The chorus is especially so with Del Rey croons about, figuratively but possibly literally, getting high on the beach. Then it quickly goes into a double beat as she raps midway through, going back to her hip-hop/trip hop influences that were so prominent in her earlier sound like in her first album, Born to Die.

The lyrics are assertive. Thematically speaking, the song is about her dealing with a relationship with her former lover that has gone off the rails. In the midst of it all, Del Rey shows her self assurance. She knows that is done with the drama. In the end, she just wants to get away from it all and find a place of peace.

This is a chill, dreamy, in your face summer track that is sure to be stuck in your head for while but it’s one you wouldn’t mind being in there.
