“Cover your crystal eyes and feel the tones that tremble down your spine. Cover your crystal eyes and let your colors bleed and blend with mine.”
Iceland’s most loved export, Of Monsters and Men, had a meteoric rise from the depths of obscurity to global chart-toppers in 2012. The pressure has been on since their frankly faultless debut album to not fall prey to second album syndrome. This week the band announced the release their sophomore offering, Beneath The Skin, which is scheduled to drop on June 9th alongside the first taste of the new studio album in the shape of lead single “Crystals.”
The quintet’s new song sees a continuation of their lush folk-pop stylings and fairytale lyrics. Singer Nanna Bryndís Hilmarsdóttír shines through during the quieter parts on a track that has an arguably darker feel thanks to a heavy opening drum section. It still has that trademark rousing nature though with flourishes of brass and an infectious chorus line. Safe to say we’re looking forward to hearing the rest of the album which is available to pre-order now.
